Bi Luo Chun Green Tea (Pi Lo Chun)
The Jewel of Dong Ting Mountain

Bi Luo Chun (碧螺春), also known as Pi Lo Chun or Green Snail Spring, is one of China’s most celebrated green teas. Originating from Dong Ting Mountain in Wu County, Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, this exquisite tea is renowned for its delicate flavor, fragrant aroma, and unique spiral shape, which resembles a snail’s shell. Harvested in early spring, Bi Luo Chun is a testament to the artistry and tradition of Chinese tea-making.

The history of Bi Luo Chun dates back to the Tang Dynasty (619–907), when Dong Ting Mountain was already a well-known tea-producing region. However, it was during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) that Bi Luo Chun gained widespread popularity. By the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911), it had become a tribute tea, reserved exclusively for the imperial court.

One of the most famous stories about Bi Luo Chun involves Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty. During his visit to Tai Hu (Great Lake) in the 38th year of his reign, the emperor was presented with a local tea known for its intense fragrance, which the locals called “Xia Sha Ren Xiang” (吓煞人香), meaning “Scary Fragrance.” Impressed by its aroma and flavor, Emperor Kangxi renamed it “Bi Luo Chun”—a name that reflects its deep green color (Bi), spiral shape (Luo), and early spring harvest (Chun). This elegant name has endured, capturing the essence of this remarkable tea.

Bi Luo Chun is distinguished by its tightly rolled, spiral-shaped leaves, which unfurl beautifully when brewed. The tea’s white, feathery appearance is a result of the fine hairs that cover the young leaves and buds, harvested in early spring. These delicate leaves produce a pale, golden-green liquor with a fresh, floral aroma and a smooth, sweet flavor that lingers on the palate.

The tea’s unique characteristics are a product of its terroir—Dong Ting Mountain’s fertile soil, mild climate, and proximity to Tai Hu Lake create the perfect conditions for growing high-quality tea. The region’s misty mornings and cool temperatures slow the growth of the tea plants, allowing the leaves to develop their rich flavor and aromatic complexity.

True Bi Luo Chun comes exclusively from Dong Ting Mountain, a protected area that ensures the tea’s authenticity and quality. Only teas produced within this region can bear the name Dong Ting Bi Luo Chun. Due to its limited production and high demand, authentic Dong Ting Bi Luo Chun is considered a luxury tea and commands a premium price.

In recent years, Bi Luo Chun has been cultivated in other parts of Jiangsu Province, such as Yi Xing, Li Yang, Li Shui, and Gao Chun. While these teas follow a similar production process, they lack the delicacy and fruity notes of their Dong Ting counterpart. Known as Jiangsu Bi Luo Chun, these teas are more affordable and widely available. However, for those seeking the authentic experience, Dong Ting Bi Luo Chun remains the gold standard.

To fully appreciate the delicate flavors of Bi Luo Chun, it is best brewed with water heated to around 75–80°C. Use 3–4 grams of tea per cup and steep for 2–3 minutes. The tightly rolled leaves will gradually unfurl, releasing their fresh, floral aroma and sweet, refreshing taste.

Bi Luo Chun is more than just a tea—it is a symbol of Chinese tea culture and a testament to the skill of its producers. Its rich history, unique appearance, and exquisite flavor have made it a favorite among tea connoisseurs and a cherished gift for special occasions.

Whether you’re savoring its calming fragrance or admiring its spiral-shaped leaves, Bi Luo Chun offers a sensory journey that captures the essence of spring. Explore our collection of Dong Ting Bi Luo Chun and experience the timeless elegance of this legendary tea.
