Du Yun Mao Jian Green Tea
The Exquisite Green Tea of Guizhou
Du Yun Mao Jian stands out as one of the most renowned teas in China, captivating the hearts of tea connoisseurs across the nation with its irresistibly sweet flavor and luxuriously silky texture. Among the many tales associated with this remarkable tea, one that has been passed down through the years is its naming by Mao Zedong. It is said that when the people of Guizhou presented him with a small quantity of this precious tea as a gift, he bestowed upon it the name we know today. Before this momentous christening, the locals affectionately referred to it as “Yugou tea”, a name that vividly captures the unique, fish-hook-like shape of its leaves.
Originating from Duyun in Guizhou Province, South China, Du Yun Mao Jian thrives in a region rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage. Duyun is nestled within the Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, where tea plantations are scattered throughout the mountains, embraced by lush forests and meandering creeks. The climate here is a harmonious blend of mildness and moisture, with an average annual temperature of 16°C and abundant rainfall throughout the year. The soil, a fertile and nurturing cradle, is laden with iron and phosphate, providing the perfect foundation for tea bushes to flourish. Although Guizhou, as a central-southern province in China, doesn’t always bask in the limelight when it comes to tea production, it quietly yields a significant amount of high-quality green tea. In fact, much of the finest Du Yun Mao Jian has long been cherished and consumed by the local people, adding an air of mystery and exclusivity to this already celebrated brew.
Often, Du Yun Mao Jian finds itself being compared to Bi Luo Chun, given their somewhat similar production processes, both involving meticulous hand-firing techniques. However, Du Yun Mao Jian possesses its own unique set of characteristics that set it firmly apart. When observing the dried leaves, one notices a captivating blend of green hues accented with a delicate tinge of yellow. This color palette extends to the brewed leaves and the resulting infusion, creating a visual spectacle. In terms of appearance, it bears a resemblance to Bi Luo Chun, with small, slender leaves that curl ever so slightly. But when it comes to taste and texture, Du Yun Mao Jian truly shines. Its flavor is a harmonious symphony of sweetness, full-bodied and vibrant, leaving a more profound and lasting impression than some of its counterparts. It strikes a chord that is reminiscent of Xin Yang Mao Jian, yet with a distinctiveness all its own.
Three remarkable “yellow” features define Du Yun Mao Jian: the yellowish tint of the dried leaves, the brilliant golden-yellow display when the leaves are wet, and the alluring yellow-tinged liquor. And as for the taste, it tells a story of pure indulgence. It presents a smooth, well-rounded sweetness that stands in stark contrast to the darker, more complex flavor profiles of teas like Bi Luo Chun. In every sip, Du Yun Mao Jian unfolds as a delicious and inspiring green tea, a true testament to the rich tea heritage of Guizhou.
