Brief Introduction to
Tunxi Green Tea
Tunxi Green Tea, also called “Tun Green” or “Tunlu”, is a specialty tea originally produced in such four neighboring counties around Tunxi City as Xiuning, Shexian, Ningguo and Jixi of China’s Anhui Province. Since the teas from these four counties were packed and shipped from Tunxi for export in the past they are collectively called “Tunxi Green Tea”. Tun green is a famous Chinese roasted green tea, sometimes referred to as Green Gold, which belongs to the Top 10 Chinese green tea varieties. The finished product is a tightly rolled tea leaf with a kinked appearance that suggests an eyebrow, whose distinctive feature has influenced the names of some of the sub-varieties of Tunlu tea, among which the main sub-varieties include Eyebrow, Precious Eyebrow, Tribute, Needle, First Rain, and Green Flake.
Surrounded by mountain ranges, Tunxi City is the first stop to Huang Shan Mountain which is a scenery resort listed as the World Nature and Culture Heritage by UNESCO in 1990s. Teas are planted on hillside from 300 to 2000 ft in elevation. Its fertile yellow soil, abundant rainfall, and warm temperature provide favorable growing environment for tea.
Tunlu Tea is one of the Chinese highest grade green tea. It has a long history of more than 1,200 written years. It has been prized as ‘Green Gold’ for centuries. Tunlu was first known to the world during the reign of Emperor Wanli of the Ming Dynasty (1563 – 1620) with excellent flavor and taste among the same kinds of green tea. Tunxi Green Tea became worldwide known around 7th century and had been exported abroad in a large scale since the beginning of 16th century. Nowadays they are still the best sellers around the world.
