Brief Introduction to
Pu-Erh Tuo Cha
A convex knob-shaped Pu Erh Tea, its size ranges from 3g to 3 kg or more, with 100g, 250g and 500g being the most common. It is also known as bird’s nest puerh because its shape and small size resemble a tiny bird’s nest. The name of Tuocha is believed to have originated from the round, top-like shape of the pressed tea or from the old tea shipping and trading route of the Tuo River. In ancient times, Tuocha cakes may have had holes punched through the center so they could be tied together on a rope for easy transport.
In the old days, tuochas were made using maocha exclusively from Yunnan Province. The maocha was steamed, wrapped in a cotton fabric bag, and compressed into a small rice bowl shape. Once shaped, they were removed from the fabric and left to dry. Breaking a piece off a full-sized tuocha takes some work, because they are compressed very tightly so producers started making miniature tuochas for convenience, so you can drop a whole piece in your glass or pot and brew it easily. Tuochas were traditionally made from green puer, but producers started using black puer to make this convenient size available to black puer lovers.
When you brew Tuo Cha, the leaves will be tender and yield a light honey colored infusion. The 3-5 gram size is the perfect amount to appreciate the tea’s rich flavor without being too strong. The single serving size is perfect for new green puer drinkers who are learning how to measure tea.
This tea has a light aroma and rich, smooth flavor with a long finish through multiple infusions. The liquid is light and clear, and the infused leaves are the color of bamboo leaves. You can feel the sweetness of the tea in your throat after a few sips.
