Brief Introduction to
Dong Ting Bi Luo Chun (Pi Lo Chun)
Bi Luo Chun, also known as Pi Lo Chun (literally as Green Snail Spring), is originally produced in Dong Ting Mountain located in Wu County, Suzhou of China’s Jiangsu Province. It is a green tea that is tightly rolled into a spiral resembling snail meat that is picked and harvested in early spring.
Dong Ting Mountain is an old tea producing area dating back to the Tang Dynasty (619-907), Bi Luo Chun become very popular during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and later a tribute tea during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). According to the Qing Dynasty chronicle “Ye Shi Da Guan”, Emperor Kangxi visited Great Lake (Tai Hu) in the 38th years of his ruling period. At that time, because of its rich aroma, local people called it “Xia Sha Ren Xiang” (literally as “Scary Fragrance”). Kangxi decided to give it a more civilized name – Bi Luo Chun. He was right, Bi Luo Chun tea is far from scary. There are many other stories about how this tea was named, but the important characteristics are the deep green color (Bi), the curled dried tea shape similar to a snail (Luo). In addition, it must be harvested during the early spring (Chun), which results in its white feathery appearance.
Our Biluochun tea comes from Dong Ting Mountain which is now a protected area. Only the leaves picked within Dong Ting Mountain can be considered as Dong Ting Bi Luo Chun. Due to the popularity of Dong Ting Bi Luo Chun, this tea is now widely cultivated in other parts of Jiangsu Province such as Yi Xing, Li Yang, Li Shui and Gao Chun. The tea making process is similar, but the Jiangsu Pi Lo Chun is larger, less delicate and less fruity than their Dong Ting cousin. Dong Ting Bi Luo Chun is now very expensive while Jiangsu Bi Luo Chun is a little cheaper. We haven’t listed Jiangsu Bi Luo Chun here and in our wholesale pricelist.
