Brief Introduction to
Zhu Ye Qing (Green Bamboo) Green Tea
Zhu Ye Qing, one of Chinese famous green tea, is originally produced on Emei Mountains of China’s Sichuan Province. Emei mountain has a long tea-making history of over 1,800 years since the Han Dynasty. Zhu Ye Qing tea had maintained a historic continuity with Buddhism and Taoism. The Buddhism was introduced from India to China in the later period of Han Dynasty and gradually flourished and spreaded throughout China. There is an old temple called Wang Nian Si on Emei Mountain, where the monks did Zen meditation with eyes closed for long time every day, they felt tired and exhausted, while tea, as you know, is very helpful for satisfying thirst, eliminating fatigue, recharging energy and refreshing body, so naturally, then drinking tea became popular and even necessary after the meditation. In 1964, Chen Yi, a former Chinese leader and general, visited the temple and was served some of this tea. He enjoyed it so much that he asked the name of the tea. The monks told him it had not been named yet, and asked him to name the tea. He looked at the bright green tea leaves floating straight up in the water and thought they looked like fresh bamboo leaves. He named the tea Zhu Ye Qing (Green Bamboo).
Today much of the Zhu Ye Qing is produced on nearby Meng Ding Shan (Meng Ding Mountain), where the climate is better and there is more space for growing tea. Our Zhu Ye Qing is completely handmade, and the dry leaves are slightly flattened from the pressure of the tea master’s hand as he dries the tea in a hot wok. This organic green tea is picked in early April when the first leaf is just beginning to open from the bud, resulting in a very high nutritional content. The aroma is refreshing, like walking through a bamboo forest in the morning. Zhu Ye Qing is appreciated for its rich, slightly vegetal flavor and lack of bitterness.
